The report outlines the Kāwala Conservation Easement, developed for the Ala Kahakai Trail Association to protect 824 acres of culturally and environmentally significant land in Kāwala Ahupuaʻa, within Kaʻū district, Hawaiʻi. The easement, granted by Kuahiwi Ranch and co-held by Ho‘omalu Ka‘ū, aims to preserve the cultural, historic, and natural resources of the land while allowing sustainable ranching and agricultural activities. The site features 182 historic properties and is rich in natural resources such as lava tubes, water seeps, and indigenous plant species. Additionally, the easement safeguards the rural and subsistence lifestyle of the Kaʻū community, perpetuating a sense of place tied to both historic and contemporary cattle ranching, integral to the district's character. Located near Nā‘ālehu with gated access, the land emphasizes cultural stewardship and environmental conservation in perpetuity.
